In recognition of the diversity of our community, we will create a mural outside Alisha’s Café Collective representing respect, equality and cohesion. Led by visual artist Katherine Gailer and muralist Lucy Lucy, the design will be developed in consultation with the community. Painting it will also involve resident participation at a day-long event with music and food. Local producer Oscar Jimenez and 12 musicians will collaboratively compose and record a song that articulates the beauty of diversity. Public art is a highly cost-effective way of shaping consciousness and creating collective attitudes. The collaborative-participative nature of this project will drive ownership deep into the community. Every resident involved in the development and creation of the work will become an advocate of respect and a supporter of diversity. Involving a highly diverse group will also drive recognition and generate new connections. With Moreland among the 10 LGAs with the most overseas-born residents (Victorian State Government) and Brunswick being the top songwriter postcode in Australia (APRA/AMCOS), the location is ideal to become a guiding beacon for communities across Australia.
