Our proposed project is to activate and enhance two zones within our school's heavily used and appreciated schoolyard. Nestled within an inner city location in Thornbury, our community has restricted play space in high demand by its users each day. Our proposal aims to enhance and improve these outdoor zones with high exposure to create flexible play spaces with diverse learning opportunities whilst engaging with the natural environment and its senses. This project will enable students and many local community groups to learn and develop sustainability skills whilst providing immense benefits in improving their general wellbeing whilst immersed within it.
Our play space currently lacks opportunity for quiet and exploratory play of an organic nature. Our community would benefit with this opportunity to create imaginative and exploratory play zones that in effect provides a base for people to connect with each other and nature.
The proposal includes raised vegetable planter zones, organically formed seating platforms made from natural materials including tiered timber decks and arrangements of mudstone rock forming platforms for seating or play and campfire like gatherings for discussions and interaction. Our proposal is a concept design of landscape architect Simon Ellis, renowned for children's gardens in public spaces.
