This joint project between Carlton North Primary and Yarra Energy Foundation aims to deliver a holistic approach to sustainability in practice. This compost garden will reduce landfill, teach benefits of composting and the science behind decomposition and how it links to food production. The school is committed and keen to use composting as part of engaging students on sustainability, communication, mechanics and chemistry of composting. The rain water tanks will ease the pressure off an aging guttering system and teach kids about precipitation, water-runoff and weather. Solar PV drops costs with savings to be re-invested in the school.

The transition to a sustainable school requires a collaborative approach by community members, YEF, students and teachers.

The three, student decorated, compost bins providing access to the localised and wider community. Parents and Yarra Energy Foundation members are keen local community enthusiasts; are eager to help students with the maintenance of the compost garden. We see this as an outstanding legacy for all students and residents to participate in. The legacy will reach students, teachers, and residents for many years to come, with the Solar PV system and rain water tanks rounding out the transition toward a holistic, community-minded, school.
