To ensure a range of small and large communities had the opportunity to be part of Pick My Project, no more than 50 per cent of a regional partnership areas funding was awarded to one local government area (LGA). As a result this project was unsuccessful.

The Spruhan Ave Community Hub is in need of a major upgrade to be able to continue to meet neighbourhood needs and provide an ongoing place of welcome and hospitality in Norlane. Once completed the hub will offer an urban farm, commercial kitchen, large dining hall, multipurpose spaces, kids play area, office space, outdoor eating, large workshed, fruit trees, flower/native gardens and a five-bedroom residence. Through the community hub, local leaders help run a wide range of initiatives for Norlane residents of all ages including community meals, food cooperatives, health programs, leadership training, social enterprises, social events and more.

The community hub addresses the needs of the neighbourhood by supporting residents to form, organise, contribute and belong to a place where they can empower one another to work together to meet local needs and build community resilience. Specifically this project will address (1) food security in the neighbourhood through community meals, urban farming and food cooperatives. (2) Cultivation of community initiatives through training programs that enable community members to design and deliver their own locally inspired initiatives through the hub. (3) Education and employment pathways through increased participation rates, opportunities to volunteer or lead and engage in social enterprises.

It is always refreshing to come along side those who are not only campaigning for change but also in the trenches with those they are trying to help, encouraging them to be a part of solution. Anything that we can do to assist this initiative which highlights the concept that everyone has a positive contribution beneficial to the community, is a worthwhile endeavour.

Incredible work that is being done out here in Norlane by this organisation who work from 'within' the community to effect change from the inside out. Remarkable.
