Digital literacy is a critical skill. However, obtaining digital literacy is extremely difficult for many adult migrants and refugees. These people come from different backgrounds, have different learning experiences and insufficient English language skills. Often their use of technology is limited.
The Fitzroy Learning Network teaches new arrivals English and other skills needed for their successful settlement. However, it’s important we do so in a way which integrates the use of up-to-date technology and develops digital literacy.
Australia is a technology society and without strong digital skills these people can’t successfully participate in our local communities.
FLN needs up-to-date technology.

For migrants and refugees, digital literacy skills will have a positive impact on:
• finding and keeping jobs;
• supporting children at school;
• understanding and obtaining community services;
• accessing further education;
• participating in community life.
FLN will benefit by being able to:
• access a greater range of learning tools;
• provide more personalised learning experiences;
• provide more relevant digital literacy programs;
• manage learning activities more effectively.

If this project succeeds, adult migrants and refugees will settle more successfully and make a greater social and economic contribution to our community.

It is so important for new arrivals to become digitally literate and new technology will make this so much more user-friendly.

I agree with Jenny. Easy to use, up to date computers would be of enormous benefit to the FLN students.

Strongly support this project. FLN computer technology is old and out-of-date. Clients of the centre need easy-to-use, up-to-date computer technology to support their learning of English, to search for and apply for jobs, use on-line government and other computer systems, as well as the rest of the online world. This is very difficult with the technology currently used at FLN.
