Working with the City of Melbourne Street Garden Guidelines and with the support of the North West Patch, we propose the installation of a network of twenty 1x1m wicking boxes and eight medium-sized basic composting facilities in several different locations around West and North Melbourne.
The garden beds wouldn't be individually owned by any person, but shared with the whole community. Local people would be invited to manage the gardens and share the produce. Local compost facilities will reduce waste going into landfill, and provide a resource for the community and gardens
Experienced horticultural experts would give gardening education workshops.
The gardens would provide environmental, sustainability, recreational, and health benefits, while using available open spaces in an area with minimal private and public open space.
The beds would constructively use nature strips and unused street spaces to enable community interaction, sustainable living, outdoor activity and enhanced livability.
The gardens would be a community resource for many without room for gardens.
Individuals could grow fresh food for themselves and others while engaging with their local community.
The workshops would provide skills to commence the gardens and compost systems and the opportunity to nurture practical wisdom and a sense of community.

This would be absolutely brilliant. Would love to see this on Roden st, plenty of room along there and lots of neighbours who could use this.
Happy to tenderly look after one in Stanley Street :)
Between Railway parade and Adderley Street, there are a few neighbours who would be interested in supporting the idea.
Great idea. I hope it gets up.
Love this idea and opposite Hawke+King at victoria street would be an ideal location too.
Please keep adding your suggestions for locations in North and West Melbourne. There have been some great ideas so far. A couple of the West Melbourne locations I'd thought might be good in terms of community access and sunlight were on Hawke St outside the Apollo cafe, and Roden St between King and Spencer (near where the bench and bird-feeders are), but ultimately it's about getting them where they will be of most benefit to the local community, so your opinions are the ones that count!
The idea is wonderful for inner city streets with wide median strips and high density living. The opportunity to grow veggies whilst working with & meeting neighbours is a winner.
These are so good, they bring people together. Could we have them down Stanley Street please from Adderley to Railway Place
I love this! It would be great to get these near Dryburgh and Stawell Street where there are lots of apartments with little space for veggies.
Miller Street West Melbourne is a very wide street with a large medium strip for planters. Very similar to the image show for the project. It is something I have been considering for the street.
Would be great to see them on the Victoria st Medium strip between Abbotsford st and Dryburgh st.
Love this! Am moving to North Melbourne next year and would love to contribute. Some vegie beds along the median strip in Errol St would be brilliant!
I'm new to this area and hope to meet my neighbours with this community garden initiative very soon!
Great idea. Hope it’s funded and meantime I’m being hopeful and looking out for nearby spots in West Melbourne, for some of the boxes!
Fantastic! I love this 👏
Well done! This is such an excellent ideia for our community!
This is Brilliant! Wish you could also do in flemington near the estate.
Maybe a project for next year’s Pick My Project Kerstin?
Beautiful.
A great idea, very suited to our neighbourhood. I'd be happy to volunteer to help. Well done Jason and North West Patch!
Excellent idea
What a great idea for an inner city community
Brilliant, North West Patch have a great record of getting things done and engaging the local community!
Fantastic idea. I’d love to see this supported by the community. I’d happily support a box.

Good idea to add more greening to the area, particularly with so many more apartments being built with no access to garden space.
