As power costs have nearly doubled over the past year, the Central Deborah Gold Mine plans to install solar power to help offset the alarmingly high power costs currently threatening the mine’s financial viability.
The mine is a major tourism drawcard that is rated the No. 1 attraction in Bendigo on Trip Advisor. It offers a range of interactive underground tours for all ages and hosts over 42,000 visitors, including thousands of school children, each year.
Electricity costs are threatening to push our running costs to the point where we’ll have to reduce our offering unless action is taken.
Australia’s history is linked to its gold mining heritage. The Central Deborah Gold Mine is a living piece of this heritage that brings this story to life.
Installing solar power will secure the financial viability of the mine, keep Bendigo’s gold heritage alive for future generations and ensure that the mine can continue to be a major part of Bendigo’s important tourism industry.
This project will also demonstrate – along with the Bendigo Tramways which already runs on solar power – that heritage and sustainability are interlinked. Interpretative signage will be used to demonstrate the heritage and future.

The Central Deborah Gold Mine is a unique example of a virtually complete mine from the gold mining revival of the 1930s. This national treasure needs to be sustained with sustainable power, what a great idea to use Bendigo's 300 days of sunshine each year. All the best. James A Lerk, local historian.
Thank you for the comments James - Yes an important part of our city's history and important we can maintain it as s sustainable operation into the future.
Bendigo's Mining Heritage
Keep the gold Mine going strong - it brings lots of tourists and their cash to Bendigo.
Great project
A most deserving project to support Bendigo's iconic trams, tram workshop and tourism industry.
I like it. A great project. Solar and other renewables are the way to go. And I love the Bendigo Sustainability Group's concept to use the old gold mines under Bendigo for substantial Pumped Hydro Energy Storage - we can integrate the old and the new for a better future. Well done Central Deborah.
Great idea
Will be a great project to showcase solar power use in a high profile tourist attraction. Thand you for the opportunity to submit the project.

A tourist venue visited by people locally, nationally and folk from other countries.
The tourist guides provide a lot of information about gold mining days and Bendigo's heritage .
