This will be the first project of its kind in rural Victoria, bringing together local business, not-for-profit, and council in a community-focused project. The vacant lane between “Where Is My Coffee” and “Bowled Over” will be transformed into a living garden-art wall with public space, creating more reasons to visit and linger in the CBD. It will feature both edible and ornamental plants grown in a solar powered, rainwater fed, wall-mounted hydroponics system. The wall will be transformed by a mural that recreates the story of Wangaratta and surrounds vibrant past. Produce grown will be used to benefit the community.
A living green space that will be enjoyed by community and visitors, and will be another step towards making Wangaratta an attractive destination and place of local pride. With pop-up events, exhibitions, and food stalls, there will be new reason to linger and spend in the CBD, and a place for the young and old to engage. A centralized 'living' education space for schools and community groups, and could be the new hub for small events in Wangaratta. This will gather local skills - artists, food producers, and trades - creating employment and opportunity to showcase new and existing skills.

I think this is a fabulous idea and will strengthen the link with the rest of the CBD and being opposite the visitor centre will provide locals and visitors the chance to utilise this wonderful city resource.

Great initiative, well done. Love the idea of a green space with a vertical garden. It’s different, hip and just the right idea to make a very ordinary looking space, next to some beautiful old buildings, come to life with nature, art, creativity and people.

Wangaratta needs a big Sci Fi presence to lift up the area, brighten up that area would be a huge welcome. encourage lots of young people to hang out with. make new friends with. I’m a Sci Fi / Fantasy artist, also an ideal place where artists can go to show, discuss their work. Wangaratta needs to be a more Artistic town, illuminate the town with something like this would be amazing 😉.
Definitely. While the mock-up is an impression, we aim to get local artists and creatives involved in the design of this beautiful wall art. It will be the new place to hang out for sure!
