Mildura City Heart, the central business precinct in Mildura, is home to a number of historic and locally significant murals, creating a timeline of commercial activity within the CBD. MCH initiated the mural project to document the existing works, and to commission three new works thematically based on Mildura’s social, environmental and industrial development. The project was inspired by 2016 Mildura Writer’s Festival writer-in-residence, Nick Gadd, who’s ‘psychogeographic’ walk through the streets unveiled histories of our commercial predecessors. The existing and new murals will be accessed as a walking tour via an interactive digital map.

Mildura City Heart’s Business Plan outlines making MCH a destination of choice through engagement of public spaces and placemaking, and by creating points of educational interest for visitors to the precinct. The project aims to build on Mildura’s sense of identity by recording and archiving the existing murals, and to activate civic pride by continuing to create works that underline Mildurian’s cultural idiosyncrasies and add to the story of our region’s growth. MCH is working in partnership with local traders (The Art Vault), artists (Moose McGowan), community groups (Sunraysed) and educational organisations (La Trobe University) to realise the project.

Great Idea: building on signage revealed during Writers Festival and the legendary Moose Mc Gowan.

Something inspirational related to our region would brighten everyone's day, as well as promote the area for tourism.
