A concrete path stretches through Watson park and continues through two grassed thoroughfares as it winds its way down to Gaskin park where the football, netball and bowls clubs are located.
There is absolutely no lighting present at any point along this path, despite being frequented by locals after dark. This is a large safety issue, particularly in winter when it can be dark from as early as 5pm.
Pending both council approval and grant funding, I would like safety lighting installed along the full length of the concrete path so that the whole area is well lit.
The path is used by people making their way to and from the shopping centre, football/netball training, for people walking dogs and for general fitness. The town bus service also sets down directly outside Watson park so people will use the path to return home.
Watson park contains an abandoned kinder which is a site for vandalism. Churchill Primary Schools' yard also backs onto the park and this leaves their grounds vulnerable vandalism too.
Assaults and vandalism are far less likely to happen in a well lit area, and this needs to be rectified.

LOVE some of the ideas BUT BUT BUT How about when we have a sign saying "NO JUNK MAIL" you pretend we DONT WANT ANY DAMNED JUNK MAIL!!!! everyone thinks oh, THIS isnt junk but it IS! Take your advert RUBBISH and find somewhere MORE applicable to "PLACE IT" NO BLOODY JUNK MAIL!! YEEEEEEEEEEEESH!!!!!!!
Watson park is a great park with a playground that enjoyed by lots of kids all year round. and it is a great walk way through to Gaskin park (the footy oval). At night the area is actually VERY dark. We live close to this area and when I go for a walk after work it is actually quite eerie...I actually tend to carry a little torch so I can see......I believe that by installing lights in this area will make the park and walk/parked area that connect the 2 locations much lighter ......... making it much more safer for our community.....
It is really dark!!! I've seen little kids running in there with blankets in the pitch black - presumably ghost stories or hide n seek!!!
Watson's park is a lovely park, for all ages! It's used during the day, therefore if adequate lighting was provided for the pathway, it would make it safer, to be used at night.
I believe the provision of such lighting is an OHS necessity, not an optional extra for council who are elected to care for our community. Being able to see sufficiently whilst going for an evening walk after work is a basic need and would encourage more community members to make the extra effort to 'get off the couch and away from the TV'. Fresh air, grasslands and physical activity all combine to lower risk factors contributing to poor health. (a documented Social Determinant of Health fact.) Having such lighting would encourage better health and reduce chronic diseases including depression. People would feel safer as they go for evening walks with / without their dogs. Don't underestimate the value of providing such lights. We want Churchill to be enjoyed and treated as valuable.
A number of people I've talked to on the edge of the park/track have been vandelised and believe this would be less likely was the area more well lit...
Great initiative that we can all get behind and support. #makechurchillgreatagain
Such a useful way to spend the grant money! It's not just for Churchill but anyone in the valley going to sports games or visiting friends or family. Other towns in valley have good street lights, so should Churchill! Thank you Geraldine McClure :)
