This 1890's suspension bridge, originally constructed as a private bridge for vehicles and supported by steel cables (originally from Melbournes cable trams), is now a pedestrian bridge and the only pedestrian and safe bicycle link to the 'North of the Merri' growth corridor, which currently has 300 homes, and a further two approved subdivisions for 2,000 residential allotments. Replaced in 1966 by an adjacent concrete structure for vehicular traffic, the old Wollaston Bridge is now listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (No H1453). The bridge has become a much loved icon and a focal point for locals, tourists and photographers.

Being the main pedestrian and bicycle link to northwest Warrnambool, it is essential for schoolchildren, exercisers, cyclists and city workers . In recent years, the 'Friends of the Merri' group have been working with both Warrnambool City Council and the MAD for the Merri Group to maintain its ageing structure and enhance the surrounding area with indigenous plantings. Our current project aims at the provision of appropriate lighting, as support by a Council Master Plan. Night time use is unsafe due to the timber planking and minor incidents have occurred. Properly designed lighting would also enhance its architectural beauty.
