Students of East Gippsland Specialist School will learn sewing, then apply these skills to make shopping bags with recycled fabric and screen printed designs. Students will learn mending skills and make sustainable projects to reduce plastic use and waste. The project would take place in a new Trade Skills Centre (TSC) to be constructed at the school. Members of the school parent body and broader community will have access to the TSC and sewing equipment to learn sewing and mending skills through sewing classes at the school and after hours.

The students at EGSS, a school for students with intellectual disability, along with their parents and broader community, will learn to sew through making shopping bags and mend clothing. This functional, creative, inclusive, eco-friendly project will develop life long skills as well as reaping environmental benefits. This project will engage our parent body and the broader community of the school. I have a vision to increase parent involvement with the school; by participating in sewing programs, I hope to further the development of a culture of parents supporting each other.

That's a very good skill for them to learn and maybe some will find a career path through this activity.
