To ensure a range of small and large communities had the opportunity to be part of Pick My Project, no more than 50 per cent of a regional partnership areas funding was awarded to one local government area (LGA). As a result this project was unsuccessful.

Establish a bank of volunteers, who along with their dogs, are locally trained and accredited to offer animal-assisted interventions in a range of settings.
We will initially partner with schools, to facilitate the Read to Dog program, designed for students struggling with and lacking confidence in reading. They will also contribute to animal-assisted classroom activities.
We will provide ongoing support to volunteers, ensuring safety standard are in place.
If successful we plan to expand the program to offer interventions for kindergartens, aged care, rehabilitation, hospitals and other settings.
Our project will address regional access issues to metropolitan based accreditation training.

Supporting all students to reach their potential is key to prosperous communities.
A number of our children however, require interventions to engage in their learning, and to build feelings of self-worth.
Animal-assisted interventions have a direct impact on social-emotional regulation, class participation, and behaviour.
For some, therapy dogs provide the impetus to attend school, and help shy and withdrawn students to open up and interact.
The benefits for vulnerable students are significant. If a student is able to be calm, gentle and caring toward a therapy dog, they are able to model these behaviours at other times, modifying challenging behaviours.

Wonderful idea, would love to be involved in this from grass roots, my springer spaniel would love to be involved too, she loves attention, and I have had experience in classroom settings for many years.

I would love to see a program like this in Warrnambool to support children in schools. There has been a lot of research in support of this kind of therapy.
I am interested in training my dog to be a therapy dog.
