To defend ourselves from imminent closure, The Latrobe Orchestra Inc. is reinventing how orchestral music is delivered in Gippsland, through an innovative and inclusive community based music school.
Our Beginner String Program will offer group tuition on stringed instruments to all community members at a subsidised rate, with the intention that these musicians eventually reform our currently recessed Francis Orchestra, and eventually rebuild our senior Latrobe Orchestra.
Beginning in 2019 with 20 participants, the program will include weekly small group tuition and ensemble with a qualified and enthusiastic community minded string teacher.

With an unemployment rate of 16%, the Latrobe Valley is full of young and old who have been affected by job loss, long term unemployment, and the apathy brought about through associated social issues. The cost of instruments and tuition is prohibitive for many. This program will allow participants to gain string instrument and ensemble skills and experience, whilst also building meaningful connections and relationships to their local community.
The end result will be a self-sustaining Orchestral Program, delivering sequential educational experiences and catering for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.

Amazing idea to support people of all ages to learn an instrument and play in an orchestra. It's never too late!

Absolutely support the LaTrobe Orchestra's initiative. This is what community engagement is all about. Amazing things happen when people come together to play music, and this community deserves to be funded to enable these wonderful opportunities. I look forward to witnessing the success and growth of this program.

Our daughter Megan benefitted greatly from membership of the Francis Orchestra when she was learning to play the cello at Primary school, now she is also a pianist and guitar player. Parents also benefit from involvement with the Orchestras and encouraging their children's development.

This will be a fantastic program to support the growth and future of a community group for all ages, who share the love of playing an instrument and making music together.

A great community group offering amazing opportunities for our youth, dedicated experienced leaders selflessly giving their time to young people. This is about more than making music.

An excellent program, both for young, and young at heart, like myself, who took up an instrument at 40yrs, and still loving it at 55!
