Eltham Primary School started a Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program in 2017. This program highlights the link between gardening and the food we eat. This link promotes healthy eating habits, encourages volunteer engagement, builds student self-esteem, provides mentoring opportunities and brings the school community and local residents together.
Our current facilities include one oven/stove. To increase hands-on student participation, our proposed renovation will incorporate multiple student cooking stations and upgrade our kitchen. To complete the renovation to the Department of Education standards, the project will cost $100,000. We have received no external funding to date. We need your help!

This program brings our school and local communities closer through mentoring with local groups (Men’s Shed), supports VCAL high school students with practical job training in horticulture/landscaping and welcomes parent and local resident volunteers in our gardening and cooking classes. Community members of all ages share a sense of pride and connectedness through working and achieving together, which builds resilience while fostering a connection to the natural environment.
The additional cooking stations will ensure continued success of the program, improve learning opportunities, enhance interaction between students and volunteers and will encourage independence in our students to develop essential life skills.

A wonderful initiative that brings to life the valuable lesson of organic growth and food nutrition. I can’t think of a better way of complementing our children’s education.

My husband has been volunteering for this project for the past 12 months and just loves the
interaction with his grandchildren and the other pupils. They love working in the garden and then
sharing what they have learnt with the family, including reproducing their meals for all to enjoy. The
garden is thriving with the inclusion of 7 hens providing eggs for cooking. Please help them improve their kitchen.
