Many are able to cope effectively and demonstrate remarkable resilience by drawing support from their family and community. Unfortunately, others are placed in a more vulnerable situation and are at an increased risk of developing social, psychological and mental health issues. Social and psychological issues developed under these circumstances may further exacerbate distress, lead to the use of negative coping mechanisms as well as worsen existing mental and/or physical health concerns. These outcomes result from an erosion of social structures that normally regulate communities and individual well-being.

The benefits will wide-ranging availability of essential services is vital in countering family violence amongst African Australian communities. Initiatives such as Parenting Skills Programs and Community Education Programs about Australian laws are all highly useful tools. Moreover, these mainstream services need to be made available in a culturally meaningful way to African Australian communities with a refugee background. Typically, these functions have been provided by family and community structures within traditional settings in the country of origin. However, war and the ensuing civil breakdown that occurs in its wake mean that many affected individuals remain unsupported.
