By integrating the school grounds with the adjoining public park, both students and community groups will benefit from new play equipment in a secure space. The funding will refurbish the existing play ground and isolate it within the school grounds with a new fence and internal gate to make the safe space accessible to students, and an external gate for access for community groups. It will provide improved facilities for the school holiday program the school hosts for the community and provide a secure, shaded play space for children and families.

There are two main benefits for the community. Our school adjoins an open park with no fences that local dogs owners use to exercise their dogs, which roam freely into the children's play areas. The new secure play space would create the separation of dogs and children that parents are seeking, as well as improved safety for smaller children to not wander off. Secondly, there are at least 14 local schools that use the school's existing - but dated - play equipment as part of its school holiday program, as local council no longer runs this service for the community.

Is this project to extend the fencing to enclose the existing playground, or separate fencing? If the existing fencing is extended - how will this impact the walking track?

Will this lead to people/children in the community being unable to access the existing playground during school hours if it is enclosed and used by the school?

I support refurbishing and fencing in the existing playground. How this would integrate with the school and what impact this has to the community needs to be examined more closely.

Hi Ian. The proposal impacts the school’s facilities but not the existing public playground or the paths in the park. The proposal is to refurbish the playground on the school premises and then fence it off within the school perimeter. A new secure gate will sit on the existing fence line separating the school and the adjacent parkland. The existing public playground some distance from the school would not be changed as a result. Hope that makes sense - hopefully the photo will help to clarify too.

This project is a wonderful idea. There have been numerous incidents at this park with dogs and kids leaving kids in very vulnerable situations. This is a project that will benefit the whole community.

What does this mean for the current play equipment? Will it be moved?

As a large dog owner I think this would be great. My worries about children interacting with my dogs aren't about dog attacks it is because they are large and run around and I am worried they could knock a child over.

If the play equipment was fenced off that would be great for us dog owners.

Hi - just to clarify, this proposal is not about fencing off the open play equipment that sits on Collier Street, but to make a refurbished, fenced and shaded play area secured within the primary school perimeter available to community groups and the after school care/holiday programs the school hosts for the community. It would be accessed from within the school and via a gate facing on to TA Cochrane Reserve. In effect there would be two playgrounds near each other, one that coexists with the dogs and one separate.

A much needed playground update with children’s safety at the forefront. A very worthy cause & great idea.

This area gets a lot of foot traffic during the school week & on weekends, we are here 6 days a week.
