The 'Inner North-West Travelling Skateboard School' will provide free skateboarding workshops with equipment provided for inner north-west communities spanning the council areas of City of Melbourne, Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Moreland, and Yarra. Over the duration of a year, a male and female instructor team will facilitate 200 workshops, partnering with all receptive schools and youth/community organisations in the region. Youth will have unprecedented access to skateboards and expertise through a 'from school to skatepark' event programing. With four sessions a week orbiting the region over 50 weeks, it's estimated at least 5000 people will directly benefit from the project.

The 'Inner North-West Travelling Skateboard School' will allow an unprecedented number of inner north-west residents who have never skated before to try skateboarding in an inclusive and supportive environment, for free. School sessions will provide foundation skills for youth to skateboard independently, which will then lead to weekly public skatepark sessions that help demystify the skatepark culture, build community connections and a sense of belonging among participants and associated families/guardians. The inner north-west has a dense and growing population. Young people will greatly benefit from an intensive program building confidence and social cohesion through the shared joy of skatepark culture.

This is a wonderful project for the community. All students in year 7-9 had the opportunity to learn a new skill in a different environment

As a kid I never engaged in team sports because I felt inadequate. Skateboarding comes with a sense of individuality; being free from team constructs, and thusly experimental. Engaging with skateboarding gave me a physical activity to focus on, keeping me fit, and feeling fulfilled to this day at age 32. I can’t thank my parents enough for encouraging me to get involved with skateboarding, but I was lucky. Many other kids didn’t have the same encouragement, and these kinds of resources and social infrastructure is what the youth need. Thanks to the constant hard work of the community minded leaders in skateboarding, their work is paramount in providing alternatives to those struggling to engage in conventional activities.
