Vicki Couzens is an Indigenous artist from our region (creator of 'Belonging to the land of the eel', 2000, as pictured). A Kirrae Wurrong / Gunditjmara woman, she will work with several artists and language-groups to mount a stunning exhibition of fibre-art forms that reference local places and traditions. These will reflect the extraordinary Indigenous cultural-heritage and living culture of this region, from woven eel-traps referencing Budj Bim and its ancient aquaculture, to new commissions using traditional techniques. From large-scale sculptural pieces to small, delicate weavings, this exhibition will be visually arresting and display traditional knowledge and vibrant living culture.

This is an opportunity for important personal and cultural expression from members of the Indigenous community and for non-Indigenous people to learn more about the history and culture of Indigenous peoples of our region. Hamilton Gallery is a public gallery and this project provides a broad audience access to this opportunity for intercultural sharing and learning. The artworks are the focus for conveying important traditional knowledge in an outstanding exhibition venue, supported by public programs such as workshops, storytelling and lectures that extend community participation, learning and interaction around key exhibition themes. An accompanying catalogue provides a permanent exhibition record.
