In St Kilda, locals and visitors often access the streets by walking through the interconnecting laneways that are typical of the area. One of these laneway - a strip that connects Clyde and Fawkner Streets, receives lots of foot traffic and is a hot spot for illegal tagging and vandalism (see photo). This project will commission a professional street artist to paint a permanent artwork on the large brick wall at the Clyde Street end. The artwork will prevent future tagging and the theme will be community friendly, making the area feel safer and more welcoming for all.

St Kilda is an area synonymous with arts and culture, and this project is about using art to positively tackle a community issue. The Clyde Street laneway is located in a residential family area but the wall vandalism makes it feel like an unsafe and intimidating place to be. A commissioned mural by a professional street artist is a proven way of preventing illegal tagging and other vandalism. It can be enjoyed by the whole community, and will help make this public thoroughfare a place where everyone can feel comfortable.

I second Chantal Eva’s comments and suggestion and would like to propose we extend street art to as many laneways and currently degraded areas in St Kilda eg Little Grey St. So many visitors come to St Kilda and if it becomes known for its fabulous street art, that would benefit the local community and local businesses alike. A vibrant, and proudly cultural community also makes for a safe and inviting one.

This is a fantastic initiative!! Could we please have the same in Post Office Lane that leads to Pakington Street. It is often littered with hard rubbish, drug paraphanaelia etc. Pakington street is so beautiful and family friendly and has a playground, two fabulous cafes on the corner and the back entrance of the library. It would be so wonderful to extend this project to include both areas for safety and community pride. I love where I live and don't begrudge those that reside in the area that have drug and alcohol issues. However, I believe all residents of St Kilda; families, trendy people, artists, backpackers, tourists, sex workers and those on lower incomes, or struggling with mental health and addiction issues would ALL benefit from the community being BEAUTIFUL, FUN, INTERESTING, CULTURED AND COOL!! For instance, the Angelina Jolie street art on the corner of Inkerman Rd and Chapel Street on the outside of Neighbour café is a tourist interest all in itself with many people photographing and sharing it on Instagram. Street art that is contemporary and lifts the façade of the area whilst still maintaining the urban chic feel of St Kilda, really is so mood-changing and improving environmental design has proved to lower crime and unsafe behaviour before.
