Historic Rutherglen has an 1880's railway station and an operational silo area in the centre of town. Although easily accessible and adjacent to the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, this highly prominent vacant space is under-utilized and visually unattractive. My idea is to construct an attractive, landscaped outdoor meeting place for the community to gather and for recreational activities; other public open spaces are small, not multipurpose and not particularly wheelchair accessible. To beautify we will need to plant drought-tolerant unusual species, and install artistic pergolas and gabions, seating, a wood-fired oven, rocks and wheelchair-friendly brick paths.
In this gathering space all age groups can connect, enhancing well-being. It is important for our older residents to have a flat space to easily access and enjoy. A beautiful garden space will improve livability, with residents having restful areas to sit and chat, families to picnic, children to play, neighbours to use the wood fired oven and people to enjoy open air movies. This space will facilitate the expansion of our popular Farmers' markets improving the livelihood of local producers. Residents can enjoy exercise points for Tai Chi and Yoga and utilize the rail trail for cycling and walking.

Might be a good idea to incorporate an area for caravans to stay overnight. It would encourage spending with local businesses.
Great idea. Certainly brightening up a vaguely neglected space.
A community Garden should be incorporated into this idea. Raised wicking beds (only require watering once a week in the hottest Rutherglen summer days) made from recycled materials, and water collection tanks. That way people could have access to community food production. Produce could be donated to any number of charities / community groups; local meals on wheels for example.
Great Idea I'm fully in support of this
A wonderful and much needed project.
This project could be the catalyst for further developments such as water collection for water features and gardens along with artistic projects that celebrate our history.
Great idea!
Would love to see Silo art & all the ideas to beautify this area sound fantastic.
The community and visitors would really benefit from this project.. To have this space made beautiful and welcoming would be a real asset for our town ... silo art would be wonderful
The Rutherglen community would benefit from this project, outdoor activities, live music, picnic areas for visitors passing through, open air movies, school concerts.
A gateway to the township and a place to rest
I think it would be a very valuble piece of land to the community, to have this made beautiful , with trees shrubs and flowers, seating for picnic etc, so that everyone can enjoy, including tourists.
Very worthwhile project for community
Silo art would be an excellent way to promote the town.
This would be a great place to develop for locals and visitors to our beautiful town and maybe incorporate solo art to add Rutherglen to the art trail
Voted for
Excellent way to preserve history and create community bonding .
This would be a great project for Rutherglen as it is what visitors see when they first arrrive from the North of town and would then lead hopefully to to a silo painting project on perhaps a gold or wine aspect.
Our community and visitors would certainly benefit from this project( Carole’s by candlelight, outdoor films and visitors would have a great space to each their lunch)
It would be wonderful to engage a silo artist to add Rutherglen as a destination on the Silo Arts Trail
Arts Rutherglen works to promote the arts in Rutherglen, exposing young and old to the arts in various forms. This project would not only provide a point of interest to visitors to our area but help foster an interest in the visual art form.
This community project compliments, links and extends the Rutherglen Revitalisation program currently being undertaken in this historic town. It will also provide a welcome entry point within easy walking distance to the Town's Visitor Information Centre located at the intersection of Routes B400 and B377/76. I completely agree with the earlier comments.

An under utilised space with great potential for a town meeting space! It has so much to offer for a variety of uses including the already fantastic suggestions for use.
