I CAN Network camps provide a safe, fun place where Autistic young people are accepted for who they are. This grant would help us execute a weekend camp (3 days/2 nights) in the Ovens Murray region for approximately 35 Autistic teens (ages 13-16) from the area. In addition to offering inclusive outdoor camp activities, our program includes a strong focus on helping Autistic young people see themselves through a strengths-based lens. Camps are led by experienced mentors who are Autistic themselves. Post-camp support would include online mentoring and a group reunion to deepen connectivity and impact.

Everyone benefits from a community that embraces Autism. The teen years can be a particularly vulnerable time for Autistic young people, many of whom feel isolated and misunderstood instead of valued and accepted for the amazing individuals they are. Our camps provide robust opportunities for support and validation through social connections with Autistic peers and encouragement from Autistic mentors. Several of our camp participants eventually go on to become I CAN mentors themselves, which provides an attractive avenue to paid employment and fosters a pride that comes from positively influencing the lives of others in the community.
