Food growing operations at Holmesglen TAFE (Waverly) are limited. A new urban farm designed to reduce labour and water input will be installed using 100% recycled materials. The farm will be completely self-sustaining with water sourced from rooftop catchment, seedlings propagated onsite and organic matter composted onsite from food and green waste generated on campus. Sensors and test points placed in the garden will be used as a learning platform, engaging students in horticulture, landscaping, nutrition, hospitality and cookery. The broader community can visit the site anytime and dine at ZEST (on campus restaurant) where the produce will be used.

This project will bolster Holmesglen's educational capacities by providing an interactive platform for students to experience the latest in urban food growing innovation. The project will promote interdisciplinary coordination and cooperation and give students a holistic understanding of the farm-to-table process. Principles of sustainability will inform the design of the site and the curriculum, exposing students to ideas around closing urban resource loops, building circular economies, water-sensitive urban design and healthy eating. These benefits will be exported to the broader community through ZEST, organised tours on open nights (every 8 weeks) and public visits (site is publicly accessible).

Connecting people to their food and each other in local communities is the way forward for resilience and food security. Empowering through education will multiply the benefits of this wonderful project. It's not hard to do, but people often need to SEE to believe and find the confidence to have a go. This will demonstrate best practice and inspire others to do the same.

I am a journalism student at Monash University, and I am writing an article about your project. I wanted to speak to the organiser/creator of this project, someone who is managing it or volunteers. So, if you can provide me with any emails or contact number, it would be great! Please let me know as soon as you can. Thanks!
Kind regards,

Absolutely love this concept ..
The student involvement to grow, harvest , prepare, cook and bring food to table- What a wonderful learning experience and a therapeutic sense of achievement .
A great community project to evolve and grow for the hospitality students to explore there creativity through seasonal produce which will
certainly differentiate and open opportunity to explore various connections and menu options ...

Next generation sustainable farming which is close to the community and serving fresh produce daily is key to good health and well being of community. It also reduces greenhouse gases which are needed for cold storage and transportation of today's produce produced 100s and 1000s of Kms away and not to mention we do not have to cut forests for farming!
