In Australia, two women die every 10 days due to family violence. Research shows that many women establish close relationships with their salon professionals and confide in them about the violence or controlling behaviour they are experiencing at home. HaiR-3R’s will fund interactive workshops for salon professionals to learn how to spot signs of family violence in their clients, respond and refer them on to a family violence service where they can get the help and support they need. The workshops will be free and open to salon professionals and students all across Victoria.

Family violence is the leading cause of death and physical disability of Victorian women aged 15 to 40. During a trial of HaiR-3R’s, over 150 salon professionals were trained in 3 months. With full funding, we can build a community free from family violence, where everyone feels safe. After attending a workshop, salon professionals will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to handle disclosures of family violence in a salon setting. By knowing where to refer women who are experiencing family violence, HaiR-3R’s aims to intervene early and potentially save a woman or child from death or serious injury.

I have worked pro bono to raise the profile of the Hair-3Rs training for hairdressing salons. It changes lives for the better and saves lives. Hairdressers who have done the training can sleep at night knowing that they've taken the appropriate action to help a client in distress. Training hairdressers to help people in family violence situations works. Let's spread this training to all of Victoria today.

It's so important to have Hairdressers trained to be able to refer and respond to people who have confided in them.

This is a very important project because research shows that women often disclose family violence to people such as hairdressers rather than police or health professionals
