Growing skills with the Chiquitines Community in City of Whitehorse

Chiquitines is a group of families that started operating as an inclusive volunteer-run
Spanish Language Playgroup in Mitcham. It fosters a strong sense of community
and a shared passion for the Spanish language and indigenous and non-indigenous
cultures. It also offers a range of multicultural and bilingual services to community
groups and schools around Victoria.
Our project aims to train the second generation (in their early 20’s) to become the
new facilitators and leaders of our community. As part of this renewal, we would also
like to update and develop our cultural assets into on-line publications of educational
multicultural kits.

The main benefits are:
The creation of a program for a cross-generational exchange amongst the group’s
community.
The mentoring of new leaders that will be trained with skills to preserve the
multicultural assets (gained over the years) and develop them into updated
educational kits. With the use of new technologies other Victorian groups will have
these assets available.
Over the years, Chiquitines built up strong relationships with other groups within the
Spanish speaking communities and educational organisations. This project will
refresh the way we participate, interact and share our gained knowledge in a wider
cross-cultural experience.
