We will develop community Cooking Clubs. Members of existing community meals programs will be assisted by local volunteer chefs to develop practical cooking skills. They will use fresh food harvested from Gravel Hill Kitchen Garden and other community gardens, supplemented by staples from Bendigo Foodshare. The Cooking Clubs will be based on the successful Lets Get Cooking program in the UK. We will develop a sustainable Australian model, with a practical how to manual that will cover all requirements, supports available and fresh seasonal recipes. We will evaluate the program and make all the resources widely available for our community.

One in eleven people in our community don't have enough food for their next meal. Bendigo Foodshare, and the 106 schools and agencies they provide food through, find that many times those in need don't have the skills to cook their own healthy cheap meals and are more likely to rely on take away food.
Cooking Clubs will foster community connections and provide low income and vulnerable people with the knowledge, skills and confidence to cook and choose healthy food for themselves and their families.

With an increasing number of isolated residents a plan like this can be utilised as a means of reaching out to others and sharing hints and ways of utilising garden space and produce. It has the capacity to reach many people who might otherwise slip through the cracks and to encourage outdoor events. There are many reasons to encourage neighbourhood participation and this seems to me to be one of the tops.

I feel that in the long term, this project will have a far greater impact on our society than what is seen on the surface. It will teach people about collaboration, having a better relationship with food and foster curiosity. It could potentially have a positive impact on our medical system due to a reduction in diabetes and other medical conditions that are known to be directly linked to food additives etc and as such our younger generations would be given a better opportunity for longer, healthier and happier lifestyles. By growing and cooking with seasonal, locally produced, food this also teaches about better taste, abundance, benefits to our local community and higher nutritional value to name a few. Obtaining support for this project would also underpin Bendigo’s current application to become a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy and should be given the full support that it can!

Gardening is a wonderful way of destressing, learning from a community is great communication.
Food for the needy, disadvantaged, homeless, jobless should be a priority. Fruit & veg are
a necessity for health & wellbeing.

This is a fantastic idea and may empower those suffering food poverty to learn new skills and ideas to assist them. Anything involving the community as a whole is empowering.
