Southbank, Australia's most densely-populated suburb, has very little green open space (2.5sqm/resident with CoM threshold set at 21sqm/resident) and too much concrete dead space, like freeway undercrofts. There is also an increasing car traffic noise issue in Southbank. Plus, traffic adding to climate change with more carbon dioxide emitted and less plants to turn it into clean air.

Solution: Grow vertical green walls on West Gate Freeway undercrofts, using low-maintenance, self-irrigated native climbing plants and increase green open space in Southbank. Inspired by a citizen-led Mexico City initiative.

West Gate Freeway x2 Undercroft Locations: 305 City Rd., 135 Clarendon Str.

The project will beautify our community, increase open space, decrease traffic noise, and help Melbourne reach its environmental goals. It’ll make these spaces feel safer for the community to walk through. The community will be invited to participate in the project launch/planting day, and help paint under-freeway columns with green/environmental motives, making it a friendlier space and increasing environmental awareness in the process.

CoM will struggle to deliver this project, due to different landowners involved. We only see State Government capable of delivering this project. Only PickMyProject can connect two bordering Councils: CoM, Port Phillip; to achieve something like this!

Great project - much needed to green up our concrete jungle.
There is so much potential to implement this as a supplement to the Melbourne Urban Forest project.
