Centred around the historic Bright Courthouse and lockup, specifically designed lawn areas and intimate gardens will provide a community space to work collectively and creatively.
The entry/exit pathway shapes the future outdoor auditorium that will adorn the adjacent garden. At the top, 150yr old Dutch Elm tree overlooks a seating area framed with interpretive signage that connects people to the history of the precinct and the vision for the facility. The centre piece is the Bright Courthouse Theatre, an 80 seat auditorium with modern facilities provides a space to demonstrate and communicate with people from both inside and outside region.

Government Hill Arts Precinct (GHAP) development will significantly enhance the ability for innovative and community-led work to be performed or presented in the Alpine Shire, as well as providing the Bright Courthouse Committee of Management the tools to expand and sustain their operations. The vision for this development is be positioned as North East Victoria's premiere centre for contemporary community-led practice and engagement.
The Bright Courthouse Committee will liaise with local artists, community groups and schools to contribute their creations into GHAP's open garden exhibition of expressive art/sculpture making it a place of creative interest.

A small community area with lots of character and history needs to be loved and preserved for future generations

This is one of the few beautiful old buildings left in Bright from its "goldfield" era. It has stood the test of time, (with a little help). It deserves to be brought into the 21st Century, where it can be utilised by future generations.
An upgrade, landscaping and connectivity to the town centre would go a long way to achieving these goals. I hope it gets the funding it deserves.

How cool would this old building to be restored for theatre groups, general public and the general community to share this building....

Would be of great benefit to visitors and to the local community to connect this historic site back to the township of Bright via upgraded acces and amenity. The improved connection/access would enhance the court house's viability as an arts resource ensuring many more of our visitors become aware of its existance and purpose

Too much history here, we have enjoyed cultural events here and certainly agree that upgrading it would be of a significant benefit to the community & surrounds

Apart from its huge historical significance, the Bright Court House has become the performing arts centre for the area thanks to the outstanding efforts of previous committees, individuals and theatre arts companies. It's an intimate, friendly space; but yes, it still needs considerable work both inside and out to help fulfil its immense potential.

Great plans to develop this valuable Bright asset and open up its presence in the town.

A wonderful asset for the Alpine Shire. The facility has in the past and will continue to encourage performers from far and wide to showcase their skills to our local community. Our vision for this community arts space has been shared by so many before, a small number of people have donated countless hours to keep it alive. Let's all get behind this project and see it take on a new life for all to enjoy for generations to come.

An excellent intimate space to encourage local children and adults to participate in the dramatic arts. The dramatic arts are important to community development and to build and hone communication and presentation skills, as well as as allowing participants to gain an appreciation of literature and culture. The outdoor area is under-developed and requires landscaping work.

Much energy has been put in by great people to develop this space to date but much needed funds will be required to continue the work . This is a valuable historic community space that deserves to allowed to be finished.

Below is some history regarding the Court House and Lockup from Heritage Council Victoria.... interpretative signage will honour this local landmark!

What is significant?
Bright Court House is a single storey brick building constructed as a court of petty sessions for the Buckland goldfields in 1861 to a design by the Public Works Department architect JJ Clark. Bright Log Lockup is a small building of horizontal log construction with a shingle hip roof covered with corrugated galvanised iron, located at the rear of the court house. It was built in 1860 and moved to its present position in 1873 from the former Police Camp.

Why is it significant?
The Bright Court House and Log Lockup are historically significant because they are associated with the early history of law and order in Victoria and with the extension of centralised government to the goldfields towns as they were established in the 1850s and 1860s. The Bright Court House is historically significant as a rare and intact example of a small country goldfields court. It was a symbol of the extension of the power of the State government to impose justice on a small and remote goldfields community and demonstrates in its fabric part of the story of Victoria.

There is no where else in Bright that provides this small intimate space to see a performance. Let’s give it the facelift it so desperately needs.
