Since 2009, in acknowledgement of the terrible events on Black Saturday, hundreds of volunteer blacksmiths around the world forged a steel gumtree and local people planted indigenous plants around it. We want to formalise the Blacksmiths' Tree garden in time for the 10 Year Commemoration of the fires.

This includes:
Solar lighting around the tree
Forging a steel vine with leaves stamped with the names of all townships affected by the fires
Planting yellow indigenous flowers at the base of the tree — the CFA colour
A plaque outlining the creation of the tree and commemorating all who contributed

This is to be a special place for everyone, to remember and reflect on the impact of the Black Saturday fires and also to find peace. The steel vine reminds us of the breadth of the devastation of the fires. The yellow flowers which will bloom every February remind us of the ongoing role of the CFA in protecting our communities.

This garden says to the communities across Victoria; we will always remember. We leave a lasting legacy; a remembrance of what was lost, but also a celebration of the fraternity, compassion and spirit that exist beyond the fires.

a public project of great significance - it is not just the symbolism, community engagement, blacksmiths support etc. I was fortunate enough to hear from some of how the tree "getting in the ground" helped their healing.

I found this memorial inspirational, heartbreaking and heartwarmingly memorable, and pay tribute to all those involved in its creation. Its concept and design make it a beautiful place not only to visit but to return to.

As a survivor of Black Saturday, I can’t think of a better way to honour the lives that were lost that day ( and after). A place of reflection .....
