Queensland Fruit Fly is an unwelcome, invasive, costly and destructive insect of fruit. Fruit fly traps will be installed in Chum Creek, Healesville and Badger Creek to detect if fruit flies are present. A qualified insect inspector will monitor the traps weekly, notifying everyone in the region if fruit fly is detected. Home gardeners, fruit growers, wineries and public land managers will all be informed of how to take action against fruit fly, and prepare for the use of sterile fly technology. Public information events will be run locally by Chum Creek Landcare, supported by Agribusiness Yarra Valley.

Early notification of the occurrence of this fruit pest will promote fruit fly eradication and management actions by all land managers in the region. This knowledge and these actions will help everyone in the region protect their locally produced fruit from being destroyed by the invasive Queensland Fruit Fly (only recently detected in Healesville). A fruit fly trapping grid in greater Healesville is essential for coordinated community action. An effective area wide trapping and management program facilitates the release of sterile fruit flies for an environmentally friendly and pesticide free option of Queensland fruit fly control.

Very important that home gardeners are free to grow fruit that is not affected by fruit fly - we don't need any more challenges to growing our own food!

Yes! Our region is able to produce fruit using successful integrated pest management (IPM) using beneficial "good" insects to control aphids and mites - let's look after our IPM programs by preventing Queensland fruit fly in the Yarra Valley
