Our plan is to have at least 10 book letter boxes located across Colac for people to share books for anyone to collect, read and possible return. We feel this would encourage families that cannot afford books to be able to provide reading materials for their family.
Letterboxes will be specially made to accommodate books and have a Perspex cover to allow easy visuals. Books would be supplied by residents in any given area and would be available for anyone to collect, read and if wanted returned. For times such as Easter, Christmas and other special events.
Sharing the opportunity for families in need to have access to appropriate reading materials and the opportunity to keep a fresh supply we feel is paramount for the long-term development of children. We hope this may assist in breaking the cycle of welfare dependency and improve reductions in truancy numbers.
Reading is a cornerstone to education and if we can increase reading opportunities then education outcomes may also improve. Books would come from local residents and be available for anyone. No sign in or out - just take, read and hopefully return. All books would be donated by the community.

THanks
You can borrow books at no cost at the local library.
Everyone is welcome.
All libraries enhance literacy.
Whether they’re owned by council, on someone’s bookshelf, or on the street being shared by people walking by.
Picking up a book means you practice your reading skills, whether you’re a child, an adult or someone for whom ‘paid’ books are out of bounds.
If they’re reading, they are practising literacy.
Kids who use street libraries are practicing the habit of reading without instruction (from a teacher, or parent) – and without the need to buy a book, or check one out from a library.
Just another way of encouraging people to read, share and enoy life
Does this budget include ongoing maintenance of theboxes to keep them looking attractive?
Are they to be made of strong, durable materials?
The boxes will be strong and yet very visible. Will have Solar lighting as part of the build.
We want to ensure they are durable but still attractive to encourage people to use them.
Maintenance will be an aspect that is part of the project. Sorry should have included this in the previous reply
I think free book exchanges like this are wonderful and have supported “The Little Library” in Melbourne for several years. I’m just wondering though, with the books being donated and the boxes being relatively simple to make, what is such a high budget going towards?
Part of the budget allows at special occasions each year for Colouring books and Colouring pencils to be supplied for families to take home and spend time with their children..
The boxes will have solar lighting to ensure visibility and provide a safe environment for both donors and users. Hope this explains this question
