As a community, we successfully fought to save Frank Street Reserve from being sold to developers. It is a cherished and valued part of our neighbourhood. Premier Andrews launched the ‘Pick My Project’ initiative at Frank Street Reserve.
We would like to enhance the Frank Street Reserve by building a play space area. Over 300 people have signed a petition supporting this project.
We have worked with Nillumbik Council to propose a play space that is a designed to be accessible, versatile, suitable to all age groups, and fitting with the natural ‘bush’ feel of the neighbourhood.
The project will benefit the community in many ways, including:
- reducing vehicle usage by having a park within walking distance;
- providing an open and inviting space suitable for all age groups;
- encouraging exercise for adults and children;
- providing a space for local community members to socialise and get to know each other; and
- opportunities for children to socialise and learn through play.

Dear Bianca and Grace, great work - as a mum of young kids this space is fantastic. Unfortunately, the attached drawing is very difficult to view any detail clearly. A small playground for 1-5 year-old's would be great, ideally with a fence and 'pool gate' latch to help keep speedy toddlers safe. Surrounded with park benches/picnic tables and a water fountain/bottle refill station. A raised herb or vegie garden would also be a brilliant addition.
We’ve proposed a small play space with a couple of swings, water tap, bench, and gardens. Designed to be accessible for all age groups, including older people in our community.
If the proposal is successful, the plans would be open to further community consultation. : )
As a local resident of nearly 20 years who rallied to “Save Our Reserve” I can see the benefits of our community utilising this space. We need to be mindful that if the playground is too large it will in fact attract unwanted traffic and noise levels for locals (which is why we all initially rallied to save this space) I would like to see a very small playground with gardens, picnic tables and possibly a community herb garden to cater for a broad range of age groups as our community is aging and the benefits need to be considered according to the greater community.
Hi there, thanks for your comment, the proposed plan is to create a Playspace rather than playground. The only traditional play equipment will be 2 swings and a see-saw, we otherwise wanted to incorporate natural materials (large rocks and wooden logs) into a landscaped area that can be used as play equipment but also look aesthetically pleasing and fit in to the natural landscape. We have included a park bench and accessible seating. We also want to add some additional native plants to the space-which we have included in the budget. The Playspace is to begin around the light pole/tan bark hill so it does not take away from the flat open space. We have designed the Playspace so it is inclusive for all ages and abilities. :)
Congratulations Grace & Bianca. This project is a great idea. Many of us fought to keep this reserve public open space. How fabulous is this opportunity? Good luck.
That would be a great community asset. I saw the comment about people using the carpark- I wonder if bollards from the council could be an idea?
It would be great to see some recreational equipment installed at Frank St Reserve, but I would like to see more detail about what is proposed. I would be concerned if the play space were to occupy too much of the reserve - an intrinsic part of its current value is that it is an unstructured space in an increasingly built environment. As a neighbour of the reserve, I would also be concerned about noise levels arising from children playing, and the potential to become a hang-out for teenagers. There has been a long-standing problem of men using the Kindergarten carpark for consuming alcohol and leaving their cans etc. behind, almost every evening. There also appear to be occasional problems with drug use and drug trading in the kindergarten carpark.
It may be a little hard to see on the drawing, but the play equipment would be on a small part of the reserve (where the tan bark pile is currently); plenty of flat, open space for dog-walking, sports, picnics, etc.
Might be worth mentioning the concerns about alcohol and drug use to the Council or police. An occasional police patrol might be an easy deterrent.
Thanks for the clearer diagram on the Facebook Page. I am now more confident that the proposal is a great fit for the local community. I wonder if a simple fitness station would be appreciated by local joggers.
This sounds like a wonderful idea!
Thanks Jane! A play space at Frank Street Reserve would be great for local residents, and all the families at Eltham Woods Childcare, Eltham Woods Kindergarten, and the Maternal Child Health Service. : )

A really accessible space with lots of room for such a great project.
