The Food Forest will surround the existing community garden on the Atherton Gardens Public Housing Estate and will be open and accessible to all in the community. It will feature fruits, herbs and perennial vegetables that reflect the many cultures of the people living in the community providing a convenient and beautiful place for locals to collect fresh ingredients, try new flavours and participate in a communal gardening project through working bees and workshops.
The Food Forest will provide local people with the opportunity to access fresh ingredients for everyday cooking especially people on a low income and those experiencing food insecurity. The project will also feature plants reflecting the cultural diversity of the community providing sometimes hard to find ingredients as well as a wonderful way for people to explore and experience the different cultures of the area. The garden will beautify the area and increase people's food growing knowledge and general well being through the many ways and opportunities to engage with the project.
