First Hike Project aims to provide newly arrived migrants and refugees with the welcome they deserve. We introduce refugee youth to the great Australian bush though an all-expenses paid overnight hiking and camping adventure, so that they can see the natural wonders of their beautiful new home.

Participants develop a greater connection with Australian culture and values in an inclusive and encouraging environment.

The original First Hike Project was launched in WA and has already run a number of trips taking refugee youth into the bush with outstanding results. We want to bring this same opportunity to youth in Melbourne.

With the opportunity to participate in a hike with the First Hike Project, not only do participants feel more connected to Australian culture and values, but they also demonstrate an increased drive to positively contribute to their new homeland.

Undertaking the hikes will teach the participants skills of teamwork, cooperation, resilience, friendship and communication that will help them continue to successfully integrate into our society. Students who have undertaken trips previously have reported a sense of accomplishment and achievement, and teachers have commented that students are interacting more in class.
