The East Gippsland Rail Trail is unsealed past the Nicholson River bridge. The section between the bridge and Stephensons Rd in Nicholson is heavily used by local and visiting bike riders, horse riders and walkers. The area is growing rapidly, mostly with young families, and sealing this section of the trail will encourage more people to undertake recreation activities in a beautiful setting and in safety, being a trail away from the Princes Highway. This trail links the two major population hubs of Nicholson to the township, enabling locals to leave their cars at home. Easy rollin' on the Trail.

Many people live in this beautiful area to enjoy the serenity. They are about 2km from Nicholson township and need to drive on the Princes Hwy to get into town. The Rail Trail can take them in on foot or by bike without the need to go near the highway, but the surface is poor and not maintained. A sealed surface would encourage many more people to utilise the Rail Trail for commuting as well as recreation. Its a great place for kids to get used to bike riding away from traffic, and the dog walkers love it too!

A well maintained rail trail would be a great attraction to our beautiful area.

It is not only the section after the Nicholson Bridge that needs work, but the from the very beginning to Phillips Lane at the Bairnsdale end, so if they are going to improve one end by putting down new bitumen, they should also take the time to repair the existing bitumen.

Hi, the volunteer committee was going to apply for funding for the McEacharn Street to Nicholson River Bridge section as our "project", but were advised at the information session for Pick My Project they were looking to fund several smaller projects rather than one or two large ones so we were discouraged from applying, hence our current application.
The committee is in the process of applying for a $100,000 grant from the TAC and hoping to secure an additional $100,000 to enable the original section to be re-sealed. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

As long as a cleared path is alongside for horse riders. We try and do the right thing and keep off the path but have no option for much of the trail as edges are overgrown

Thanks for your feedback. The volunteer committee is in the process of applying for funding to assist with removal of vegetation along the edges of the trail.

Perhaps I have missed something? The ENTIRE trail from Bairnsdale to Nicholson Bridge needs attention, and particularly the 400metre stretch from commencement at McEacharn Street, Bairnsdale . Urgent need for re-sealing, 3 punctures in 3 weeks....
The trail is well-known and an attraction, but under-utilised as I expect others too are experiencing same type problem??

I would respectfully suggest that as well as sealing the Rail Trail, the existing pathway from Stephensons Road back to Nicholson township alongside the Highway be included in this project. It would make sense to make the walk/cycle a "loop". There is an existing path, which has been allowed to deteriorate (lack of maintenance) from the township to Stephensons Road (only part has been updated from the township to the school crossing). Anyone walking from the township along the Rail Trail has to turn around when they reach Stephensons Road.

Hi Angela, Stephenson Road is an East Gippsland Shire Council road and the Princes Highway is a VicRoads road. You would need to contact those two bodies with your suggestions. The volunteer Rail Trail committee doesn't have any jurisdiction over either of those roads. Thanks for your feedback.
