This project aims to promote and teach positive and healthy communication in early childhood. The ABA-based behaviour management program will be open to all teachers and families from each of the 31 pre-schools in the Greater City of Shepparton.
* Each family can attend a 1-hour practical session providing strategies for managing challenging behaviours in young children.
* Pre-school staff will receive a 3-hour practical/theoretical session on managing behavioural challenges in the pre-school environment.
* Learning for Life Autism Centre specializes in working with young children diagnosed and undiagnosed on the Autism Spectrum who have behavioural challenges and learning difficulties.

There are almost 8,000 children under the age of 5 years living in Shepparton with almost 2,000 attending 31 pre-schools.
* Think about how many parents, family members, child-care workers and pre-school teachers are responsible for the nurturing, education and health and wellbeing of these children.
* Now imagine these adults having positive and specific strategies for managing moments, days, weeks or years of challenging behaviour at home, at kindergarten or in the Shepparton community.
* This project will help parents and pre-school teachers in Shepparton feel more confident in managing typical and atypical behavioural difficulties in their young children.

Thanks for your post.

The Early Childhood Behaviour Program - Shepparton can help promote awareness, understanding and acceptance of autism whilst supporting preschool teachers and families to manage behavioural challenges.

Helping children with ASD reach their best potential is the ultimate goal.

Yes.

(1) Learning for Life is providing a fully funded behaviour therapist (qualified as an occupational therapist and primary school teacher) one day a week for an entire year to local primary schools. Mooroopna Park Primary School (2018). Mooroopna Primary School (2017). This supports teachers and families and builds capacity within the school. They are open to considering other primary schools in the Shepparton region.

(2) Learning for Life is offering to support up to 4 local families to access ABA therapy for early intensive childhood intervention which is currently unavailable in Shepparton with a blend of accessing therapists in Melbourne and sending therapists up to Shepparton on a rotating basis. They are open to considering subsidizing the cost of therapy by up to 50%. (Selection criteria apply)

(3) Learning for Life is also offering internships to local allied health professionals (speech/OT/psychologists) to become skilled in ABA therapy as an extra tool for managing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to help build capacity in the Shepparton region.

More information is available on the Learning for Life Autism Centre website.

Locally more information is available from Jenny Mallamaci at R.I.S.E. Centre Shepparton.

Thanks for your post.

We agree there is a huge need in this area to support families dealing with autism and other behavioural challenges.

Learning for Life is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers and relies on funding and grants from government, local community and private donations.

We would love your vote to help get the Early Childhood Behaviour Program - Shepparton funded and make it a reality for 2019.
