The current permanent hard wicket is too narrow (1.8m compared to required 2.4m). The surface has worn significantly and it has several cuts and patches in it. Hence, replacement of the current pitch is warranted. Local cricketers will have access to the new pitch for formal cricket matches. It will also support casual users. Local ‘aussie rules’ footballers will be able to play football at the ground without having a hard wicket in the middle of the ground. The pitch would be installed in the spring prior to cricket season, and removed in the autumn prior to football season.

From a football perspective, the presence of the hard wicket is a major issue. It is considered to be a hazard to players and it is a concern that if someone is tackled onto the pitch, they could sustain a major injury. Also, having the hard wicket affects the ability of Mansfield Football Netball Club to attract ‘marquee’ games to the venue. A new pitch will encourage greater participation in sport for our community.

With the very high quality and curation of the Lords oval, the addition of the new pavilion , plus this drop in pitch at the Rec Oval , we will have exceptional cricket facilities in Mansfield.

This project addresses an important safety issue . It will make the oval more user friendly for footballers as well as providing an improved pitch surface for cricketers.

With the state of the Australian cricket team at the moment, we need this to secure its future. Steve Smith ruined it.
