Each year, The Youth Junction Inc. helps 18,000 disadvantaged young people from Melbourne's Western Region to integrate and participate in their local communities in healthy and meaningful ways. Blacksmithing is a craft where young people can be part of a pro-social group, to feel connected and to learn skills of discipline, creativity and perseverance. These are all important life qualities that can be taught through the art of metal-making, surrounded by mentors from their local community, who want to support young people to become involved and contribute to building their own capacity, which ultimately benefits the broader community.
We make assumptions about what young people's needs and interests are in contemporary Australia, particularly when we are discussing the needs of disadvantaged young people. We assume that they are all obsessed about technology and the digital world. Having asked young people and given a few of them a RedHotGo! at blacksmithing, we understand the powerful impact it can have in terms of their discipline, focus, independence, trust, self-esteem and confidence, as well as their creativity, social skills and pure enjoyment. This opportunity to engage young people in blacksmithing workshops could have far reaching benefits for their wellbeing.

What Steve offers is well within the capacity and interest of all young people. It may even spark an ongoing interest in creative blacksmithing.
Steve, Esteban is very good to work with. The space is great, and working, building, creating something with fire is meditative and extraordinary. It helped me at a difficult time. Hope it can do the same for some kids. Cheers.
Steve has a great ability to engage people to release their creative juices and create magic. Creating physical objects from mental images by forging metal requires focus and everything else drops away while you are in the forge, a great opportunity to shed outside influences. A terrific opportunity for youth that need to stimulate their creative side using heat, steel and gentle persuasion..
Great project! I reckon some young people would love this- ancient, forgotten skill, a bit of danger- so cool!
Good Luck!

Easily My number 1 pick!! Learning the gentle art of the blacksmith would be of tremendous benefit for disadvantaged youths in many ways and on many levels. This primal craft offers an immediate and stern grounding to all and it is highly engaging mentally, socially and physically. The Waterside Metal Art Studio is a wonderfully supportive and creative place with a tremendous team of dedicated and passionate blacksmiths as eager to share ans teach as they are to learn and listen.
