The Peer Advocacy Team will actively reach out to and support young people who have been impacted by discrimination and racism. Coordinator Deng Maleek, will support a team of 8-12 young peer advocates who drive and organise training, workshops and forums to educate their communities about discrimination and encourage participation in individual and collective anti-discrimination efforts. The program’s core strategies include empowering peer-led educational and story-sharing, building transformational relationships, and providing concrete support to young people to address discrimination , challenge racism and promote inclusion.

Racial discrimination has profound personal & social exclusion impacts.
• Young people are deeply affected by racialized media narratives;
• Young people consistently report feeling excluded from public space;
• Young people experience scrutiny, attention and questioning from police and public;
• Young people often do not feel safe in public spaces;

Young people are often unsure of their rights and of avenues to seek justice.

By actively supporting young people who have been impacted by racism the project helps to build young people’s confidence to advocate for themselves in positive and proactive ways which aim to enhance social inclusion.

A vital and essential project for our catchment area.
A leading project to help young people advocating for their rights.
A pioneer legal centre is supporting this project.
This project will help a lot of young people to be able to change their lives.
It targets the young; the future.

Great proposal. Creating opportunities for young people to take responsibility in ALL issues that impact on their lives are public expressions of justice and is exercising power over their own destiny.

A timely and important initiative. No one wants to talk about racism in Australia, but this is perhaps our most damning and fundamental issue as a nation, beginning with the first Australians (aboriginal and torres strait islanders), asylum seekers and people who aren't white. Great to see a project to support young people experiencing stigma and discrimination.
