I will run free art and craft classes for the elderly in aged care residential facilities. The classes will cover everything from painting, drawing, sculpture, crafts, to textile work, giving the elderly a way of expressing themselves, helping them form friendships and learn new skills. I will travel to the aged care facilities to facilitate the classes in the comfort of the familiar surroundings for the participants.
Kurt Vonnegut (author) once said that practicing any art ― no matter how badly ― makes the soul grow. “So do it,” he wisely advised.
Psychologists have now come to a similar conclusion. According to a recent study out of New Zealand, engaging in creative activities contributes to an “upward spiral” of positive emotions, psychological well-being and feelings of “flourishing” in life.
Living in an aged care facility can be a lonely and depressing experience. I hope to bring joy and improve the wellbeing in the older community within the Darebin council area by offering free art classes.

A very creative way to support the elderly in our community!
This is a fantastic initiative Kate. Well done, and all the best for it. The participants can only benefit from it, your teaching and care.
All the best with this project Kate. Art is so beneficial and a simple pleasure for the elderly. My elderly aunt had the opportunity to paint on a couple of mugs and a small plater memories of her childhood on the farm. With her eyesight failing she never thought she would paint. As she did this she enjoyed reminiscing and sharing with others where she had lived. We are so happy that in the last last months of her life, she felt young again and delighted to be able to hand us her own handpainted gifts as a thank you for looking after her.
This is a very important and often overlooked area in the care for elderly. We need this.
The aged community is so often neglected, this project is wonderful and much needed. The benefits will be amazing and bring joy to the participants lives.
This is a really important project. We need to make it happen!
