The project will coordinate activities between council, universities, TAFEs, community groups and citizen science environment organisations to:
• provide useful tools to support community contribution to biodiversity initiatives
• deliver activities and programs to help residents experience, connect to and care for nature on their doorstep
• increase data and reporting to improve strategic management of urban biodiversity
• promote existing citizen projects in the region and help build skills needed for greater community participation
• foster the sharing of knowledge and tools with other land managers and encourage participation of people of all ages and backgrounds
This project will increase community understanding of and appreciation for urban biodiversity by supporting greater connections with nature. Engagement with students and the broader community will be achieved by working directly local universities, TAFES and citizen science organisations (like BirdLife Australia). Through increased participation opportunities and accessibility, educators, students and residents will be empowered to be actively involved in research, in turn building acceptance and support for biodiversity initiatives, citizen science initiatives and other regional programs. This will ensure that natural assets are highly valued and biodiversity provides a sense of place and connection for the local community.
