A community vegetable garden consisting of 25 raised planter boxes, fruit trees, composting area and water tank located on the Eddy Reserve, Abbotsford.

Each box will assigned to a household who will grow food for one year, on completion of this time a new group of households will occupy each box for the following year. The project to run for a minimum of three years giving over 75 families access to learning about sustainability, food waste and production.

Each box complete with soil and seedlings provided quarterly. Local residents register interest via an online website, with residents chosen at random.

The garden will remain unfenced, allowing all community members access to enjoy the garden and pick produce if they wish. Households assigned to boxes do not have exclusive access to the food produced.

The garden should be viewed as a place to learn about food production and sustainability. Residents will grow seasonal produce in a way they potentially can’t due to the high density inner-city living of Abbotsford.

The inclusion of a composting area will reduce local waste and educate the neighbourhood in sustainable food practices.

These gardens also offer a space where the community can meet and socialise.

This idea is brilliant on so many levels. A sense of community is created, educating children on how food is grown, healthier eating habits and a sense of achievement and wonder watching something that was a seed grow into a meal that is high in nutrients and delicious. We need more of these gardens dotted throughout our neighbourhoods.
