This project aims to establish a repository of plants to educate the community about the importance of medicinal and bush food plants of the Wimmera. This project aims to bring koorie elders to educate our Koorie students who will then educate the rest of our community. Over the next two years our Science and Humanities classes will work to undertake class activities that focus on identification and propagation of these plants. Information boards for the community will be produced to show our community how to propagate these plants and their traditional uses.
This project has had a lot of traction and interest by our local indigenous community. The elders in the community have shown significant interest in ensuring these plants are placed in a central location. They enjoy the fact that they do not have to travel for hundreds of kilometers to collect traditional plants and would like the opportunity to pass on the knowledge. This project also has the interest of the Department of Primary Industries, who hope to preserve the seeds of these plants for scientific research. Having these plants close by is a great asset.
