East Bairnsdale has a high amount of public housing, single parent families and is a low socio, disadvantaged community including a significant proportion of Aboriginal residents.
The community has a population in excess of 500 residents, however has very limited public infrastructure. The garden will be open to the wider community and will additionally include within the sensory/bush garden - interactive play equipment, landscaping elements and sand pit.
The East Bairnsdale Community Hub collaborates with local Agencies to facilitate on-going educational activities for the people of East Bairnsdale including:
gardening activities, basic cooking, children's' and young mum's programs.

Extensive community consultation revealed the need for a community garden.
The focus would be on creating a sensory/bush tucker garden to enable the Aboriginal community to share knowledge and raise awareness of the medicinal and healthy eating benefits of consuming the produce and integrating in our cooking programs.
The outcome will ensure that the traditional skills and knowledge around the use of bush tucker plants will be preserved for future generations. A further outcome will be to foster a sustainable community managed garden space for East Bairnsdale families.
