The two crossings in this project, the complex Cliff St/Lee Breakwater Rd intersection and the Lee Breakwater Rd crossing, create confusion with other road users affecting safety for all road users, tram passengers and crew, especially the conductor who physically stops traffic with a red flag on the roadway. This method of stopping all traffic is dangerous and not understood by many, including visitors.

This project replicates the successful installation of solar powered traffic signals at the Bentinck Street intersection (incident free). The signals are operated by the tram driver as the tram approaches.

Installation of Solar Powered Traffic Signals at these two intersections will significantly improve safe passage for Cable Tram passengers, volunteer crew and all road users, alleviating traffic congestion and confusion that can arise at these intersections. It means buses only need to stop when the lights are flashing rather than the current requirement of a complete stop before crossing.

Traffic volume at these two intersections has increased over the last 10 years, with increased tourist numbers visiting Portland, popularity as a destination for major recreational fishing, cruise ship visits and tours. This project enhances safety for all.

When the volunteers step out to let the tram over cliff street some of the drivers that do not stop for the flag and they do not stop for the lights that we have in bentrich street

Ask the volunteers, TOO MANY near misses by inattentive drivers. Most of the volunteers are retired people with reduced mobility "hoping" that drivers stop at the red flag. Safety is a critical item that needs addressing.

What a sensible idea. I was driving here recently as a new resident and with no warning a tram appeared which if I hadn't been wary would have collided with it. I also realise Portland has the Cycling Criterium on August 19, 2018 as cyclists will have to be careful they don't slip with a sharp turn to do the laps. Also just for everyday, people who work on the wharf, locals, tourists new to the town and even for walkers visual signage and lighting would be an excellent idea.
