Community Outreach Initiative is a multi aged volunteer program that conducts an annual project for under-resourced communities, like The Block for social good. We provide coordinated work to organisations or communities that require a helping hand, all provided by volunteers from Lord Somers Camp and Power House. This year our project is to revitalise the facilities at Presentation Sisters’ Family Centre, which provides respite accommodation for families and other people in difficult circumstances. Our jobs list involves removing and relaying flooring, update bathrooms, new linen and furniture, painting the units and improve all the facilities.
The Centre provides a relaxing space for families needing respite and recreation so that they might renew body and soul. Their situations include poverty, low income, family/domestic violence, ill health, both mental and physical, and refugees. The work that we will do will give the property a much needed lift, to provide families with happier memories and a more enjoyable experience. Since opening more than 175 social welfare agencies and schools have referred people to this service and well over 30,000 people have participated in the respite program; by freshening up the facilities many more will benefit.
