Community Mosaic Project

More than 11 different languages (including English) are spoken across Flemington and surrounding neighbourhoods. A primary concern expressed by both residents and community service providers is the sense of isolation, disconnection by many new and long term residents. Each culture has a long history and tradition of tile and mosaic design work. My idea is to create a Community Arts Project. This project will bring the diverse community groups and individuals together through a series of free workshops. This culminates in a joint community art work celebrating both the community’s diversity and connectedness.

The mosaic designs created by the various community groups will decorate a series of garden boxes lining footpaths in the main shopping precinct. The decorated garden boxes will link key community locations. This collection of community mosaic decorated garden planters will: beautify the streetscape. This is a goal identified by residents as central to improving community, visual and environmental cohesion. This provide a focus for more community gatherings and interactions. It brings more visitors to the shopping prescient; creates focus points for connection and conversations for other residents. It creates a sense of recognition, ownership and belonging for local residents.
