Primary Care Connect will upgrade the Community Garden which is in a central location, close to parking, bus stops and main streets of Shepparton. Aiming to assist in strengthening Indigenous and community connections, encouraging a social space to invite community together to grow, gather and share experiences. The project will link in with other local Indigenous groups, and provide FREE cooking classes at The Connection Shepparton to immerse all in the grow, gather and cooking experience. The garden will be open to The Greater Shepparton Community Monday- Friday 8:30-5pm, located at the back of the Primary Care Connect building.
Community gardens benefit community through: providing social inclusion and connection to local land and culture; health education; enhancing food security; providing a space to encourage community to engage with others, which can be beneficial for one’s mental and overall wellbeing. Unfortunately, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders still face significant health disparities compared to non-indigenous populations. We want to use this community garden to engage, and further support the local community to reach better health outcomes. The garden will link to our new community gym, with a focus on indigenous healthy lifestyles allowing us to link healthy eating to excercise
