We will welcome our newest community members - including those from refugee and asylum seeking backgrounds - by running welcome dinners in people’s homes, and in trusted community spaces, at local food festivals.

We will reach out to our newest community members to run introductions to nutrition meetups. Sessions will include how to find the best local produce at the lowest price, using the local meeting and shopping space -Dandenong Market. We will then share ideas about cooking the most nutritious meals using what is available locally and finally share these meals together.

Coming together over a shared meal, all community members will build connections and a shared sense of belonging. Our nutrition meetups will connect with local food sellers and develop understandings about the best produce available for meals that will be shared together, using what is locally available, benefiting the community's health and local economy. Being Australia’s most culturally diverse community, Greater Dandenong will benefit from these shared meals. These connections help create a more harmonious community based on a shared love of food; pride in our cultural stories; and a need to feel that we belong where we live.

I can't think of a better way of uniting communities and promoting social cohesion than through food. This work could not expand quick enough in my eyes given the rising rates of destitution, homelessness and food insecurity in our community

Amazing initiative! Food has been one of the greatest connectors in human history, so I'm sure this project will be right at home in Dandenong in bringing people of such diverse cultures together.
