Community dinners from around the World will create a platform for migrant women to share their culture and culinary skills with the local community. We want to use food to create an opportunity to create connection and engagement across diverse community segments whilst, at the same time, providing a platform for migrant women to develop their capacity to establish a micro-business.

The initial 12 event series is a collaboration between Fitzroy Learning Network and Sibling by kinfolk (a social enterprise cafe in Carlton North).

Both the migrant women and the local community will benefit.

The migrant women benefit by obtaining the real-world experience they need to transition to the establishment of a micro business. They will also consolidate their employment skills, capacity and confidence. The opportunity to work alongside industry professionals will help them to establish careers in hospitality. This is a tangible pathway to financial independence and self-reliance.

Providing an opportunity for diverse sections of the community, whose lives do not usually cross, to engage over dinner will help break down stereotypes and promote social integration through the shared enjoyment of food.

What a wonderful idea for assisting new people to feel at home in Australia and to learn more about them and their culture and their needs for a life here.

It would be great to know more about the feasibility of the proposed outcomes in terms of participants’ livelihoods. E.g. if this is modelled on other similar projects which have been successful. Will there be mentoring for the women to help them get the most out of in in terms of their individual goals?
